A fishing trip off the coast of Georgia turned into a heart-stopping moment when a great white shark lunged toward a woman reaching over the edge of a boat, The New York Post said.
The sudden encounter occurred off Tybee Island during a research expedition organized by Knot Lucky Fishing. The Savannah-based non-profit organization provides free fishing trips for military veterans, active service members, and their families.
In the viral video, a veteran named Jen rested her hand on the shark before the ocean predator thrashed and lunged toward her arm. Jimmy Armel, founder of Knot Lucky Fishing, assured viewers that the crew maintained control of the situation and the passenger was never in actual danger.
The expedition forms part of the White Shark Tagging Program alongside Starbrite, Project SeaSafe, and Gray FishTag Research. While the team names captured sharks after fallen service members to track migration patterns, this specific shark was safely released without a tag due to safety precautions.
