French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced that France's foreign affairs ministry would cease using the Mercator projection in official contexts, aligning national policy with the UN resolution. The Transition to the Equal Earth Projection
To address these persistent spatial inaccuracies, cartographers developed the Equal Earth projection in 2018, an alternative mapping system designed to preserve relative continent sizes while maintaining visual balance.
