The City of Birmingham modernizes traffic management with innovative technology November 5, 2026 The City of Birmingham is modernizing traffic operations through a new partnership with Causeway Technologies, introducing digital tools to improve how the city plans, manages, and communicates road closures. The partnership marks Causeway’s first deployment in Alabama and positions Birmingham at the forefront of local government innovation in transportation management. “Birmingham is committed to finding smarter, more effective ways to serve our residents,” said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. “This partnership puts technology to work for our city, helping us improve traffic coordination, strengthen public safety, and make it easier for people to navigate Birmingham.” Through Causeway’s Traffic Management and Live Link solutions, city teams can coordinate road closures through a centralized digital platform and update road conditions in real time. Field personnel can activate or clear closures directly from their mobile devices with a single tap. Those updates are automatically shared with major navigation providers (such as Google Maps, Waze, etc.), giving motorists more timely and accurate routing information and helping reduce confusion, improve traffic flow, and support safer streets. The technology replaces disconnected, traditional processes with a coordinated system that gives city personnel greater visibility into road activity and the ability to respond quickly to changing conditions. “Birmingham is demonstrating forward-thinking leadership by embracing digital solutions to manage its transportation network,” said Abigail Drescher, Customer Success Manager for Causeway Technologies. “We’re excited to partner with the city and support its vision for smarter, more connected transportation operations.” Kelvin Blevins, Director of Transportation for the Birmingham Department of Transportation, said the platform gives city teams new tools to manage road disruptions more efficiently. “This technology strengthens our ability to coordinate road closures, respond to real-time conditions and provide motorists with more accurate information,” Blevins said. “It’s another step toward delivering safer, more efficient transportation services across Birmingham.” Beyond special events, Birmingham plans to leverage the platform to manage construction projects, infrastructure improvements and other roadway disruptions. As the first Alabama municipality to adopt Causeway’s platform, Birmingham is establishing a foundation for more connected, responsive, and data-driven transportation management. Share:
